Course Focus
The course provides an experiential introduction to sociolinguistics, focusing on the relationship between language, power, and multilingualism in Miami's diverse cultural and linguistic environment.
Students will explore:
- Spanish, Haitian Creole, English, and other languages
- The impact of migration and exile
- Globalization and media and their influence on language
- Language variation, bilingualism, and multilingual communities
- The cultural and linguistic history of Miami
Experiential Learning
Students will learn through:
- Readings and seminars
- Food tours
- A professional baseball game
- Seminars with Miami-based linguists and authors
- Independent local fieldwork
- Immersion in Miami's multilingual communities
Instructor
Dr. Salvatore Callesano (“profe”) is a sociolinguist whose research focuses on language variation, perception, and bilingualism. He earned his M.A. in Linguistics in Miami at Florida International University and has conducted research on Miami's sociolinguistic context for approximately a decade. This is his second time offering the course to CHP students.
