The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies is committed to providing our community members—students, faculty, and staff—with resources to help navigate the challenges we are facing. One of the options that can be very powerful is reaching out to your congressional representatives to express your views on how they are representing and advocating for your interests. This is a fundamental right and an important tool to ensure your voice is heard and your concerns are addressed.

General Information
We understand that among the main concerns in our community is what would happen if the decision to close the Department of Education is implemented, in accordance with the Executive Order signed by the Trump administration on March 20. It is possible, for example, that the research budget could be affected. Another concern is related to the Executive Order of March 20, which could affect the travel, mobility, and return plans to the United States of staff, faculty, and international students. In this regard, the Office of International Academic and Student Services (ISSS) recommends that all travelers review the travel guide and have all the necessary documents for the corresponding visa type (F-1 for students, J-1 for faculty, and H-1B for staff).

International students and faculty
We understand that there is a lot of concern about study and work visas status. The International Students and Scholar Services (ISSS) main focus right now is communicating accurate and verified information. For updates and notices from the ISSS, anyone can subscribe to their blog here: https://blogs.illinois.edu/view/8569. For guidance for anyone dealing with DHS, ICE, or other immigration officials, and other issues people can also go to the university’s newly launched federal updates page at https://federalupdates.illinois.edu/. Unfortunately, given the unprecedented situation, the ISSS can’t provide a comprehensive guide or protocol on how to respond if the DHS revokes international student or scholar’s status. The Pennsylvania State University has published a guide on how to respond if approach by the ICE and hold an F-1 or J-1 status. Even in case of an arrest this guide provides information, so you know your rights in the U.S. We encourage students and faculty to notify the ISSS if they face a change in their status. They are willing to address situations on a case by case basis.

Estudiantes y Profesores Internacionales
