The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign stands in solidarity with our colleagues, friends, and family in Peru as they fight to protect democracy in the aftermath of the controversial impeachment of President Martin Vizcarra on November 10th, carried out by political parties in the Peruvian Congress. These actions played a direct role in destabilizing the country in the midst of a major humanitarian crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and has had a particularly devastating impact on much needed educational and anti-corruption reforms. We condemn political violence in all of its forms and express our deepest condolences to the families who lost loved ones due to state repression of peaceful protests that occurred in Lima over the weekend. Furthermore, we affirm the rights of citizens to protest and call for democratic norms to be respected in Peru, the US, and around the world.
