Attention UIUC and the local community! Next week, nine Chilean women and grassroots organizers will visit campus and the local community to share their work and lead workshops on memory, human rights activism, and community-based art using the Chilean craft technique Arpillera Urbana.

Monday March 25: Stitches of Healing: Memory, Spatial and Women's Rights in Post-Dictatorship Chile. Spurlock Museum, 6 pm. Panel discussion organized by the Latin American & Caribbean Cities Collective, with:

  • Aida Moreno, arpillerista since 1976, human rights activist and president of La Casa de la Mujer de Huamachuco de Renca, Santiago.
  • Elizabeth Aguilera, community organizer, human rights activist, and president of the Mesa Ciudadana de Patrimonio de Lota.
  • Daniela Pizarro, textile artist and activist.
  • Ivette Quezada, researcher, Universidad Catolica de Chile.
  • Dr. Magdalena Novoa, assistant professor, Regional & Urban Planning. Moderator.

There will also be a showcase of Chilean arpilleras (textile art).

Tuesday March 26: Workshop: Compartiendo memorias de mujeres latinas a través de la práctica textil. Independent Media Center (IMC) in Urbana. 5.30-8.30 pm.

No se necesita ninguna experiencia o conocimiento previo, solo su entusiasmo por compartir con nosotras y otras mujeres locales.

Wednesday March 27: Workshop Weaving Threads of Joy: Exploring Black and Chilean Quilting Traditions. Douglas Annex Senior Center. 10.00 am -1.30 pm.

The Black Joy project and the Latin American Cities Collective, invite you to join this quilting workshop where African American and Chilean women will share their quilting traditions of liberation, love, and justice. Participants will have the opportunity to learn and create their own quilting pieces.

Participants will not need prior skills to create a quilt. Some of the pieces we create may be part of the Black Joy exhibition at the Spurlock Museum in Urbana. Food will be provided.
