This course is an introduction to the major, critical debates concerning the visual cultures of Latin America from the early years of independence through contemporary creations and performances. The materials to be analyzed will range from drawings and paintings to popular prints, from photography and film to murals and performance. In particular, the course will examine the concepts of modernity and modernization within the context of Latin American arts.
